Absolutely! Ghana is an amazing country for an adventurous traveler. You choose when you arrive and when you leave. It is important to be present in Accra the day before the start of The Hike, so that you can attend the kick-off meeting that will be held on Friday afternoon (November 15). We also recommend arranging an accommodation in Accra after of The Hike on November 17 since we end here with all the festivities.
As a participant You arrange your own flight and your accommodation prior to the start of the Hike and afterwards as well so that you can search for something that fits your budget and wishes. An indication for a flight to Accra is between € 450 / € 1000 (round trip) As a participant you pay a registration fee of € €150,- per person (early bird) or €190,- (full-fee) for the event The Hike. Each participant must also raise at least € 1500 per person in donations to help children in Ghana grow up in a safe and loving family.
This is allowed, however we don’t recommend this. For sponsors it is nice to know that all the money they donate goes to the children Ghana. All the money donated via the platform is only spend on the children in Ghana. If you want to raise funds for your travel expenses, make it very explicit to your donors that you are looking for money for your trip and not for the sponsorship project and ask them to transfer their donation directly to you
No, that's not possible. You book your flight yourself to make sure that you can book a trip that best suits your personal wishes.
Booking.com offers several options. If you book via the link: www.booking.com/supportsoskinderen, SOS Children's Villages will also receive a 7% of the total sum of your booking! The Hike will take place at traveling distance from Accra. We therefore recommend that you book an accommodation in Accra.
No, this is not possible. However, it is important to take out a travel insurance for this trip that is suitable for you. You are also required to ensure a proper health insurance coverage. We also advise you to take out a cancellation insurance.
Compulsory vaccinations / stamps are required. We advise participants to go to KLM Health Services or GGD for personal advice! Below is a brief overview of the general advice that is given for Ghana:
The authorities of this country ask for a so-called cholera declaration if you cross the border by land.
- Yellow fever occurs. Vaccination is REQUIRED FOR ALL TRAVELERS.
- Chikungunya and Dengue and the Zika virus occur. For this you need to protect yourself well against mosquito bites during the day.
- There is an increased risk of measles in Ghana. A BMR (Mumps measles Rubella) vaccination is recommended for anyone born from 1965 and not vaccinated against measles or who has had the disease. Vaccination is also recommended for children older than 6 months who have not yet received a BMR vaccination.
- DTP vaccination and Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for anyone traveling to Ghana.
In addition, there are a number of vaccinations that are participant-specific. Therefore, get advice from the GGD or the KLM Health Services.
